Scientific research has demonstrated the many benefits of music for brain development. Providing children with a fun, engaging, and skill-building keyboard and general music education at a younger age can boost all areas of early childhood development, including mental cognition, creativity, social-emotional learning, and fine-motor skills.
Traditional music education has failed to enable children under the age of 7 or 8 to participate, unless they are gifted prodigies. This is incredibly discriminatory and exclusionary.
My name is Andrew Ingkavet, and I discovered a gap in music education when my son asked for music lessons at the age of 4. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anyone who would accept him. All the music teachers I reached out to told me to come back when he was 7 or 8. However, that wasn't an option for my son Alejandro, who seemed to be born singing and always responded to music. There had to be a way, and since I studied to be a music teacher at NYU where I received a scholarship, I decided to start homeschooling Alejandro in music.
That's when I learned why everyone had told me to come back later. Traditional music curricula were all aimed at an older age group, and the first lessons involved reading abstract symbols. How could I get a preschooler to understand enough to just play a first song?
That’s when I had the first of many epiphanies.
For nearly a decade, I was at the forefront of information architecture and web design. During this time, I created websites and online experiences for major Fortune 500 brands, including American Express, Chase, Seagrams, and Cathay Pacific, among others. As a designer, I learned a process now known as design thinking. This is a structured way of asking questions to design a product, service, or experience.
To solve the problem of how to get a preschooler to understand what to practice, I used color! By directly labeling fingers, keys, and simplified notation, I ensured that the child could practice on their own and start learning without even realizing it. It was so fun, like a game!
Teaching Alejandro and his friends was a chance for me to research, develop, and test my ideas. Within months, I had a waiting list for lessons. Over the years, I shared these findings with other teachers in my studio and then with a few coaching clients. The results have been phenomenal. While other local music teachers struggle to keep more than a handful of students engaged for more than a few months, we have grown to over 150 students, with 23 teachers and a waiting list.
Over the past 15 years, I have developed the Musicolor Method curricula as well as a system for marketing, sales, onboarding, hiring, training, and scaling for music schools. This system has been replicated by teacher-owners around the world, from Seattle to Singapore, Sydney to South Dakota, Vermont to Washington, D.C.
