It's only in the last 15 years of my life that I've realized my purpose and mission. It was revealed through a simple question from my then three year old son.
"When are you going to teach me music?"
Growing up, I had a difficult relationship with my own father. We were a traditional Asian family where all of us children were destined to be "doctors, lawyers or engineers." I had to fight for my love of music to pursue it professionally. I ended up with a scholarship to NYU to be a music teacher. But after a few years, I switched into the music business side and began a vastly different career than teaching.
I was a marketer working with bands like Guns N' Roses, Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. I was a production assistant for MTV and then an on air VJ! I co-founded a digital marketing agency and spent 10 years in web and information design. And all along, composed music for theater, films and advertising.
So when my son asked me for music lessons, it was like a wake up call.

This method is really intuitive and fun for me and my students. I can see that they pretty much learn and grow almost by themselves. I like it because it doesn't go straight to note reading but builds ear training and finger dexterity.

As I searched for a teacher, I discovered no one would accept him until he was 7 or 8 years old. I was astounded. Then, as I searched for curricula to teach him myself, I discovered there were none for this age group!

WHAT IF I DON'T PLAY PIANO?
Not to worry! As long as you know the basics of music on another instrument, then you should be fine. You can learn along with your students and kids.
WILL MY STUDENT/CHILD LOVE THIS?
Yes! We have heard from so many parents that this is the best method to keep their kids engaged and loving music for years. The colors are a scaffolding tool, and you can keep moving them forward based on their progress, interest and abilities. Some kids use the colors for years, others move off quickly. It's like learning to ride a bike.
WILL MY STUDENT/CHILD STAY ENGAGED?
This program was designed for young children. We have had incredible success all over the world with children ages 3 to 12. And, even 13 to adult find it an easier, faster way to get started. So, there's an excellent chance your child will stay engaged with this program.
WILL THIS REALLY WORK?
If you follow our directions carefully, then it's pretty certain you will have great success with this program. But it all depends on you. If you purchase this and then never participate in the training, then obviously it will not work.
HOW LONG DOES THIS TAKE?
Our training can be completed with an hour per day over two weeks. If you want to go faster, you can. It's completely up to you.
WILL THIS PREVENT THEM FROM READING REAL MUSIC?
Not at all. The program is designed to continuously guide the student higher in abilities, understanding and reading. The 6th and final phase of Musicolor notation looks just like real music, only with colored noteheads. The idea is that we can get the kids playing much faster and more complex pieces than if they had to read standard notation. Over time, their reading abilities will level out with their playing, just the same as learning a language.
We recommend introducing other method books for further reading exercises.
